How Can I Decorate My Vases For Christmas?

For many who celebrate Christmas, one of the most enjoyable aspects of the holiday is decorating the home in a festive manner. Seeing our favourite decorations each year is like greeting old friends. It’s a lovely feeling.

Of course, if you’re a vase collector, you’ll probably want your vases to look as festive as possible. So, what’s the best way to do this?

Our first suggestion would be to think seasonally. What this means is that Christmas (however you choose to celebrate it) is a Winter holiday that’s intrinsically linked to that coldest season.

When choosing your decorations, we therefore recommend choosing things that evoke the spirit and iconography of Winter. So, if you’re thinking flowers, think poinsettia, if you’re thinking plants, consider pinecones, evergreens, and red berries. If you’re thinking ribbons, think white or silver to evoke snow, or red or green to evoke Christmas.

Cold colours such as light blue (or even warmer ones like a nice, bright gold) can also work well depending on your festive décor, as well as the overall feel you’re trying to create. Whatever you decide, keep Winter in mind at all times.

Of course, finding the right vase to decorate  is important. It is good to find a nice, festive vase (it needn’t be covered in snowmen , stars, or Santas, it just needs to feel ‘Christmassy’ to you). If you prefer, you can simply decorate a vase you already have on display – it’s entirely up to you.

Adding flowers is always a nice touch (they are vases, after all). Artificial flowers, dried flowers, or floral sticks are a good choice in the Winter, as they require no up-keep and are relatively easy to source. You might also wish to consider adding natural branches, sticks, Christmas tree trimmings, and other natural items that add to the wintery vibe you’re creating. Branches may be added alongside flowers and other objects, or simply on their own. After all, sometimes, less is more.

You also have the option of adding traditional Christmas decorations to your vase. Elements such as tinsel, baubles, ribbons, or small ornaments can really add to the festive feel of your vase. This is an especially good option if you have too many decorations for the tree, but still want to display them.

The addition of fairy lights can also liven up a vase (especially if the design of said vessel is a tad dull for Christmas). Wrapping lights around the vase, or better still, placing the lights inside the vase will definitely look nice and Christmassy.

Vases can be placed anywhere in the home, but placing them somewhere they can become a focal point for the room is probably the best option from an aesthetic standpoint. After all, if you’ve taken the time to decorate your vases so nicely, why wouldn’t you want to call attention to them?

Finally, remember that it’s YOUR Christmas. This means that your holiday vases can be as garish and gaudy, or as elegant and understated as you wish. Christmas is for everyone. So, whether you’re up-cycling old bottles into vases, jazzing up Poundland favourites, or showcasing rare and valuable works of art, the most important thing is that you have fun doing it.

A decorative vase can be a wonderfully eye-catching addition to any home at Christmas. Decorating vases gives you a chance to flex those creative muscles (it’s also a good activity to share with young children, provided the vases aren’t too valuable!).

Through your decorative vases, you can express yourself, and spread Christmas cheer, as well as showcase not only your creativity and aesthetic sense, but also the design and artistry of your favourite vases.

Merry Christmas!
